Dr. No: 1962

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK]
John Barry, James Bond Films (Related Recordings)
This is a surprisingly good soundtrack...considering that many of the better pieces of the film, as such the breezy instrumental version of Underneath the Mango Tree at the film's finale, was left out.
Aside from the theme, here are some of the highlights...Underneath the Mango Tree, a beautiful song heard in the movie, and another version sung by Sean Connery himself. There are also several instrumental versions of the song on the soundtrack that are also great. Other songs like "Three Blind Mice", "Jamaica Jump Up" are also good, and best played for laughs.
The Island Speaks is an ominous piece that will have you on the edge of your seat. And there is also versions of the original James Bond theme that Norman wrote before Barry rearranged it (whatever THAT meant), one of which is as slinky and sexy as a theme can be.
The downers...well, Dr. No's Fantasy, whatever that was. And Audio Bongo...strictly filler.
Dr. No is a very good soundtrack overall, and you won't be disappointed.

THE ORGINAL SOUNDTRACK

From Russia With Love: 1963

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK]
This is the first Bond score John Barry wrote, and began a legacy - Barry went on to write another 11 scores for the Bond franchise.
In his score, Barry clearly captures the spirit of Russia through his remarkable talent of instrumental writing. Although Lionel Bart wrote the theme tune, Barry arranged the music for orchestra. He effortlessly blends this tune into the score, often interweaving it with the 'James Bond theme' (for example in 'Opening Titles', 'Bond Meets Tania' and 'Death of Grant').
There are plenty of atmospheric tracks on the album, including 'Golden Horn', a light track with many strings playing pizzicato; 'Girl Trouble', dramatic music accompanying the famous gypsy girl fight; 'Guitar Lament', a sorowful piece featuring prominently the accoustic guitar; and 'Spectre Island', when an eerie melody played by the harp and piano is introduced.
The CD/film also features Barry's first use of the '007' theme, one that he would use subsequently in 'Thunderball', 'You Only Live Twice' and 'Moonraker'.
My personal favourite of the album (and I found it difficult to decide because all the tracks are of high quality) was 'James Bond with Bongos'. It was great to hear a different rendition of the infamous James Bond theme, this time with the bongo's percussive influence jazzing the piece up! In short, I thoroughly recommend this album to anyone; Bond fan or non Bond fan alike! I'm certainly glad I bought it!

Goldfinger: 1964 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK]

The soundtrack to Goldfinger is a famous one, and when it was released in 1964 it selled real good. Just like any other Barry-Bond-soundtrack it is a great CD, but still not one of the best. Barry didn´t found a perfect balance with action-songs, beatufil songs and exiting songs before his next Bond-score, Thunderball. The Goldfinger soundtrack doesn´t have a great balance.
The Main Title song Goldfinger is of course a superb one, and you can say nothing bad about that one. Probebly did John Barry understand how good this song was, cause in the soundtrack he works alot with it. In 5 five songs can we hear instrumental versions of the title song, both in very beatufil music (like in "Alpine Drive") and something like action-music (in "Dawn Raid on Fort Knox").
The entire instrumental version of the title track is not so good, and it "steals" some of the great tunes from "Dawn Raid on Fort Knox", but it doesn´t fit in the instrumental song.

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK]

In, my opinion, this is one of Barry's best scores, along with Goldfinger and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The music beautifully complements Bond's mission in Japan, and stands on its own as great music too. I would break down the tracks as follows: GREAT- "Fight at Kobe Dock- Helga", "Mountains and Sunsets", "Bond Averts World War Three", and the end titles. GOOD- "Capsule in Space", "The Death of Aki", "The Wedding", and "James Bond- Astronaut". OKAY: The title song, "A Drop in the Ocean", and "Countdown for Blofeld". The worst track was "Tanaka's World", which was boring and repetitive. I like all the music on this CD except that track. My main gripe is that they didn't include the music from the Little Nellie helicopter dogfight. Then I would give this CD more than 5 stars (if that were possible).

On Her Majesty's Secret Service: [SOUNDTRACK] 1969

John Barry, James Bond Films (Related Recordings)
John Barry's music for "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" ("OHMSS")
is clearly the best overall score in the entire Bond series. "Golfinger" is a
close second largely because of a knockout song, but "We Have All the
Time in the World," especially as sung by Louis Armstrong,
is itself a treasure and Barry's instrumental score is a bit better here.
The soundtrack on cd as released by Capital/EMI is acceptable except for
the expected missing cuts. As with all of the early Bond soudtracks,
the cds are reprints of the original recordings which, because of the
limitations of LPs, could only include so much music.
Some of these "missing" tracks have appeared in later recordings such
as Nic Raine's "Bond Back in Action," but true Bond and Barry fans still
yearn for the original recordings or Barry conducted updates.
Barry broke with tradition with "OHMSS" by using an instumental for
the title (lyrics were written but never used) making this a unique score.
And that main theme remains definitive...it is Bond, and even though
Sean Connery is missing in this film, Barry is quick to give a musical
reminder of what we are about to experience. If any of the Bond scores
deserves an expanded edition (and several do: "Goldfinger," "Thunderball,"
"You Only Live Twice,") "OHMSS" should be at the top of the list. Still,
the score in the film is first rate, and this soudtrack recording will do quite nicely.

THE ORGINAL SOUNDTRACK

Diamonds Are Forever: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK] 1971

The good news with "Diamonds Are Forever" (1971) was that Sean Connery had returned as 007, John Barry was back to do the music, and Shirley Bassey, again, was signed to do the title song. It was Connery's last appearance as James Bond with the Broccoli-Saltzman production company, and that was the bad news. Barry teamed with Don Black to produce one of the best songs in the Bond cycle, but like "You Only Live Twice," and "We Have All the Time in the World," "Diamonds Are Forever" broke from the brash model of "Goldfinger" and presented a more sultry tune. Bassey demonstrated her versatility in this fine performance. The title's main theme provided the musical framework for much of the instrumental score, but two other themes also emerged, a campy and sinister theme for Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd, and something of a variation on Barry's "Space March" from "You Only Live Twice." The score worked well on the screen, and has proven to be one of the most enduring soundtracks. Clearly, the key to the success of this score is the main theme from the title song. A major part of the music flows from a variety of interpretations of that theme including a subtle and interesting combination with the Norman-Barry James Bond Theme in "Bond Meets Bambi and Thumper." Two cuts that were not included on the original soundtrack appear on the Nic Raines "Bond Back in Action" ("Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd" and "Blofeld's Laser"), but the music contained in them is pretty well represented on the soundtrack. While the score seems a bit less dynamic than earlier Barry entries to the Bond cycle, the title song and theme are important and delightful additions.

Live and Let Die" (1973) introduced a new Bond, Roger Moore, and a new musical team, Paul McCartney and Wings and former Beatle's producer, George Martin, to set the tone. The primary focus here was to produce a hit title with Paul and Linda McCarney and Wings. Martin simply came with the deal. The title remains one of the most dramatic and best songs of the series, and was especially striking with Maurice Binder's amazing opening and end titles. George Martin's score included a foundation based on the James Bond theme and the title song, but he also introduced a fine theme for Solitaire, and interesting island music for "Baron Samedi's Dance of Death" and "Sacrifice." Without McCartney and Wings, George Martin would not have sufficed, but together they produced one of the best non-Barry soundtracks.

The Man With The Golden Gun: 1974

(1974 Film): Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK]
James Bond Films (Related Recordings), John Barry
THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN is a very underrated soundtrack. This is a very good CD. John Barry finally put an album together based mostly on the background score. Barry did not put an album out like this since his excellent YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. The main theme is quite a catchy tune and is very recognizable to anyone who has seen the film. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN has started to gather a small cult following. It's a Bond film with a comic slant that has all the elements of any good Bond film. Somehow the film looks like a very minor entry compared to the rest of the series. Yet that very fact gives it a unique and curious appeal. It is actually a very likable and entertaining film. One of the film's strengths is John Barry's score, which gives Bond a whole new slant. If you like the film you should like this CD because it covers most of the film's sequences from start to finish. This CD covers the creative music from Scaramanga's fun house, embodies several passages of the James Bond Theme and contains a great oriental flavor throughout. Highly recommended.

The Spy Who Loved Me [SOUNDTRACK] 1977

For Albert R. Broccoli's tenth James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me, John Barry was unavailable to score the film. Marvin Hamlisch came in to bring a fresh new sound to the World of James Bond and he certainly did! The score for the film may sound dated by today's standards since it features many of those familiar 70's sounds and instruments. However, the score still holds up to be one of the best non-Barry James Bond music compositions. Goldfinger defines the Bond sound of the 1960s. A View to a Kill defines the Bond sound for the 1980s, and GoldenEye for the 1990's. But it is The Spy Who Loved Me which defines the Bond sound for the 1970's. My only complaint on this score is some of the music has been altered or changed from the film version to this CD version. For example, Bond 77 in the movie is a lot more enjoyable than on this score. And where on earth is the rest of that great music from when Bond and Anya are at the pyramids? Hopefully EMI will release a special version of the score with the original music. Until then, as Bond say's in The Spy Who Loved Me, "This was only intended to wet our appetites." It sure did wet mine.

Moonraker: 1979

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1979 Film) [SOUNDTRACK]
James Bond Films (Related Recordings), John Barry
This is probably the most relaxing James Bond score to listen to. There are many beautiful melodies on this CD, with John Barry's usual excellent use of harmony. Clearly, the expansiveness of space has been captured in the music and there is an inspired use of choirs in some of the tracks, which contributes to the ethereal quality of the score.
I personally think the title song is very good, with a haunting and evocative melody. Shirley Bassey does the tune justice, for her third and, so far, final Bond theme tune. The title song also has a highly enjoyable 'funked up' 70's era arrangement at the end of the CD, reflecting the Disco in which the score was written.
The score also features John Barry's energetic '007 theme', which has featured thus far in 'From Russia With Love', 'Thunderball', and 'Diamonds are Forever'.
The only drawback of this CD was the the complete lack of the James Bond theme in the score, something as a James Bond score collector I always look out for!

Bill Conti, James Bond Films (Related Recordings)
This CD release appends seven 'bonus tracks' of music not previously released on the original 1981 LP. But since the LP release already contained the best of the music from the movie, do not expect any real treasures in the added material. The 'bonus tracks' are excellent for providing a complete soundtrack, though they are mostly compilations of brief or slower pieces of incidental music.
Several interesting items about this album: A typo in the labeling of this CD release lists two track 3's and no track 5. The original LP release also was victim of a typo. The track described as "Gonzales Takes A Drive" was supposed to have been "Gonzales Takes A Dive" - a play on words since Gonzales is killed by Melina's arrow as he is diving into the pool. That typo has perpetuated in the back cover labeling of this CD release, but is corrected in the inside notes. And finally, the track labeled "Melina's Revenge" is really two pieces from the film. Only the first 35 seconds of the track contain the dramatic queue from the emotional closeup of Melina just after her parents are killed. The remainder of the track is the excellent action piece from the pre-credits helicopter sequence, which likely would have been separately titled "Have a Pleasant Fright."

Octopussy CD soundtrack
Music Composed and conducted by John Barry, lyrics by Tim Rice.

Soundtrack review

John Barry returns once more to do the score to Octopussy. The result is sadly a bit lacklustre and disappointing. Rita Coolidge performs the title theme 'All Time High' which generally sets the tone for the rest of this CD soundtrack. The majority of the tracks are of the slower, softer nature with the occasional action track, although even these seem uninspired. There is genuine tension in 'Bond Look Alike' and 'Yo Yo Fight and Death of Vijay' that use themes that occur many times through the CD. Most of the tracks in a personal opinion are repetitive in nature so genuine highlights of the Octopussy CD soundtrack are few, although 'That's My Little Octopussy' is a nice piece based on the title theme.

Play listing

The tracks are mostly arranged in their movie sequence order. The only adjustment needs to be moving the title theme after 'Bond Look Alike' as shown below.

1. All Time High (3:05)
2. Bond Look Alike (3:01)
3. 009 Gets the Knife and Gorbinda Attacks (3:09)

1983 Barry was back with Bond, he din´t to the score to For Your Eyes Only.
I must begin saying that I have the original soundtrack, so i have never hurd
songs nr. 3. 6. and 9., which are bonus on the CD:
This soundtrack is good. Real good.
When you listen to it, it reminds you about Barry´s work
for "From Russia With Love".
In those two soundtracks you have many dark and mystery
tunes, which work splendide.
In this album you also have a very good action-theme, which you hear for the first
time on Track nr. 2: "009 gets the knife and Gobinda attacks".
The theme returns in two more songs, "Yo-Yo fight and death of Vijay" and "Palace Fight".
Good soft songs are Track nr. 8. "Bond at Monsoon Palace"
and track nr. 10 "Bond meets Octopussy".
In Track nr. 13. works Barry very good with his action-theme
together with James Bond Theme.
The three best songs: Track nr. 2 "Bond look-alike" Track nr. 12 "The chase bomb theme" and
Track nr. 13. "Palace Fight". A traditional Barry score!

Album Details
Original soundtrack to the 1985 James Bond box office smash.
Features the title track performed by Duran Duran, plus three orchestral
reworkings of the main theme & eleven other tracks
This is a very hard to find CD. There are some really exciting tracks. I can definitely see the effort that John Barry put into this soundtrack. Tracks 1 & 15 feature the #1 hit title song: A VIEW TO A KILL sung by Duran Duran, and tracks like: 2 (Snow Job), 8 (He's Dangerous), & 14 (Golden Gate Fight) are great action tracks. They have all the same music on them but set up in different ways. Tracks 3,7,9,12 & 13 are great suspenseful tracks, and tracks 4 and 10 feature beutiful instrumental versions of A VIEW TO A KILL. The rest of the tracks are good and help keep this soundtrack together. All in all this is a great soundtrack, well worth the money you have to pay to get it.

The Living Daylights: 1987

Original MGM Motion Picture Soundtrack [Enhanced CD] [SOUNDTRACK]

The Living Daylights was the first of the Timothy Dalton Bond
portrayals but the last of the John Barry scores.
Though the film marked the 25th anniversary of Bond's cinematic prowess,
listeners can detect Barry's slumping enthusiasm for the '80s 007 incarnation.
The assortment of recording artists accompanying Barry, such as a-ha and the Pretenders,
may date the release, but the '80s synth pop sounds a bit refreshing in the face of
today's heavier beats. Barry himself even uses several synthesized rhythm tracks.
This disc includes almost a half hour of previously unreleased tracks of
incidental music from the film, including a typically exciting Bond pre-credits teaser theme.
The Living Daylights was John Barry's eleventh complete score for the Bond series,
and the instantly recognizable Bond/Barry sound was given a contemporary twist
through the use of synthesized rhythm tracks.
The CD also includes tracks by the Pretenders and a-ha.

THE ORGINAL SOUNDTRACK
Licence To Kill: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Album [SOUNDTRACK] 1989

Michael Kamen mad here in Licence to Kill a good soundtrack, using a very different style of music. There are good scores in here like: Pam, James and Felix on Thei Way To Church and Licence Revoked, the beautiful title song by Gladys Knight and Dirty Love by Tim Feehan. Kamen made his job as a composer and Licence to Kill still is for a Collector!!!
In all honesty, I think this is one of the better bond soundtracks there are. Most of them usually sound all the same, but 'Licence To Kill' offers something different. Michael Kamen of the 'Die Hard' and 'Lethal Weapon' fame, amongst others, provides an exciting and hard hitting, yet beautiful score mixed with various songs from the film. Fans of the traditional bond style soundtracks may find this a little different at first, but watch the film a few times, give the CD a few listens and you'll love this album, great for any music fan, a gem for the bond fanatic.

GOLDENEYE: 1995

I love the soundtrack. Its very oringianl and suits the film nicely. As GoldenEYE in its self was a highly original film, of which why i liked it. Also i can watch the film over and over again and listen to the score Soundtrack over and over.
GoldenEye is one of my favourite soundtracks of all Bond movies and I think Eric Serra's version of the James Bond Theme on this CD is great.I have to say that I'm tired of all these monotone Barry-soundtracks.Many hardcore-Bondfans complain about the lack of the original Bond theme on this soundtrack, but these people fail to see that other earlier Bond-soundtracks didn't have the 007-Theme at all (for example Moonraker or Diamonds are forever). And,if you should be honest: all great Bond-soundtracks are not by John Barry (For your eyes only,License to Kill,Tomorrow never dies,GoldenEye etc). It's a pity that Eric Serra didn't do an entire new version of the James Bond Theme, like Wings did it in Live and let die.I think of GoldenEye as one of the greatest Bond soundtracks ever although there's a lack of a real action-track and that's why I give it "only" four stars.

Tomorrow Never Dies: Music From The Motion Picture [SOUNDTRACK] 1997

A great piece of work by David Arnold. His first Bond soundtrack and he does a wonderful job. I really prefer the soundtrack to the movie itself. The theme song is just ok, "Surrender" is classic bond, "Backseat Driver" is my favorite track, "James Bond Theme" by Moby isn't that impressive, and the rest of the soundtrack is great, Arnold does a good job in bringing Bond back to his musical roots. Recommended.

The World Is Not Enough: Music From The MGM Motion Picture [SOUNDTRACK] 1999

First off I want to say that David Arnold has done a magnificent job at capturing the spirit of 007 for the new millenium. His blend of traditional Bondian jazz blended in with techno is perfect. This is very similar to what John Barry did for THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS sountrack. Unlike Eric Serra (GOLDENEYE) he stays in familiar territory instead of going somewhere totally new and foriegn. As for Garbage's title track, WOW. This song also captures the spirit of the great title songs with excellent lyrics, vocales, and instrumentals.
The soundtrack album has one major flaw.... missing cues. While I was satified with the amount of coverage the soundtrack album had (unlike TOMORROW NEVER DIES which left out the entire second half of the film), I was upset that essentials like the gunbarrel cue and the entire end title track (which sounded awesome) did not make the CD. Someone needs to let the producers of these soundtrack albums to make the entire CD complete.
Personally I think that this is one of the best James Bond scores ever written and rank it with great contempary John Barry scores like THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS. I hope that for BOND 20....... DAVID ARNOLD WILL RETURN...

    • Comment: Actually the "The James Bond Theme - Bond Vs. Oakenfold" Music Video is included in the Bond Bonus Extras Section what means that these contents are not on the disc itself but only can be accessed via internet. Madonna's music video and the making of are directly included on the CD. They are available in mpg format and have an acceptable quality (of course still far from DVD quality). The pictures in the galleries are nice although they only have medium resolution (not watchable as full screen) what is a little bit a pitty for the posters as many details can not be seen.

DIVERSE ARTISTER
The Best Of Bond... James Bond
(Capitol) © 1999 1 tim 1 min 7(3)

We Have All The Time In The World med Louis Armstrong och Shirley Basseys Goldfinger, Moonraker och Diamonds Are Forever är tillräckligt känslomässigt laddade för att fånga de flestas uppmärksamhet.
Sheryl Crows Tomorrow Never Dies från 1997 hör till höjdarna också.
